LITHUANIA ESTABLISHES DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH UGANDA
On 15 March in New York, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Dalius Čekuolis and Adonia Ayebare, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Republic of Uganda to the United Nations, signed on behalf of their respective governments a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Lithuania and Uganda.
Uganda is a country in East Africa, which borders with South Sudan, Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya, and includes a portion of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Its territory is about 360 thousand square kilometres. Uganda has a population of about 33 million. Kampala is the capital of Uganda.The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, but remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Uganda is a presidential republic.
The establishment of diplomatic relations with African countries is important for Lithuania’s participation in the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and when aiming to secure support for Lithuania’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2014-2015.
Uganda is the 160th country with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
