LITHUANIA ESTABLISHES DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO

After exchanging diplomatic notes, the procedure of establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Kosovo was completed. The official date of the establishment of diplomatic relations is the 1st September 2008.

In view of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Kosovo adopted on 17 February and the conclusions of the European Union’s General Affairs and External Relations Council adopted on 18 February, the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania adopted a decision regarding the recognition of the Republic of Kosovo on 6 May. On 16 July this year the Government of Lithuania decided to establish diplomatic relations with Kosovo.

Lithuania holds the position that the case of Kosovo is unique and cannot be used as a precedent to settle other frozen conflicts.

This is the 151st country, with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
