Lithuania establishes diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Tonga
On 23 September, Lithuania officially established relations with the Kingdom of Tonga. The official exchange of Communiqués on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations took place after the bilateral meeting between Gabrielius Landsbergis and Fekitamoeloa’ Utoikamanu.
"We are grateful for your strong position voting in favour of the resolutions condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine at the United Nations. We understand that in a world where pragmatic interests rather than value principles determine much, this is not easy," Minister Landsbergis said during the historic meeting.
The Foreign Minister also noted that Ukraine’s peace formula was the only basis for a sustainable and just peace in Ukraine.
“We are consistently strengthening our partnerships with the Indo-Pacific countries when seeking to get to know them better and to share our experience of diversifying our economic relations. Closer cooperation between our countries could contribute not only to bilateral progress but also to regional and global stability,” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy noted.
The Ministers also discussed possible cooperation on climate change and the development of renewable energy sources.
Landsbergis invited the Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga to come to the Future of Democracy Forum in Vilnius on November 7-8.
Tonga is one of the six remaining UN member states with which Lithuania had not yet established diplomatic relations. Lithuania has established diplomatic relations with 190 countries.
