LITHUANIA ESTABLISHES DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH MYANMAR

On 8 October, Lithuania established diplomatic relations with the 172nd country, which is Myanmar. This country in South East Asia has taken steps toward democratic reform. Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, and Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Tin Kyaw signed a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations in New York.

The countries also expressed their willingness to actively promote their cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

The establishment of diplomatic relations with Myanmar is important for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and for securing the support of this South East Asian country for Lithuania’s initiatives in international organisations.
