LITHUANIA ESTABLISHES DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH GUYANA

On 25 January in New York, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Dalius Čekuolis and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations George Talbot signed, on behalf of their respective governments, a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Guyana. Guyana is a country situated in northern part of South America between Venezuela and Suriname that borders with Brazil in the south and with the Atlantic Ocean in the north. Guyana covers 215,000 square kilometres. The country has a population of about 770,000 people. Georgetown is the capital city of Guyana.

Guyana gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. However, the country remained within the Commonwealth of Nations. Guyana is a semi-presidential democratic republic.

Guyana is the 159th country with which Lithuania established diplomatic relations.
