LITHUANIA ESTABLISHED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH SAMOA

On 19 February in New York, on behalf of their Governments, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations, Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis and Permanent Representative of the Independent State of Samoa to the UN, Ambassador Ali'ioaiga Feturi Elisaia signed a joint communiqué, which established diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Samoa. The Independent State of Samoa is the country, formed by a group of islands, situated in the western part of Samoan Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Its area is 2944 km². Samoa has a population of 217.000. The capital of Samoa is Apia.

Territory, controlled by New Zealand, gained its independence in 1962. Until 1997, the State was called Western Samoa, in order to distinguish it from the eastern part of Samoa archipelago, also known as American Samoa, which is part of the United States.

Samoa is the 152nd State, with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
