LITHUANIA ESTABLISHED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH RWANDA

On 27 March in New York, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius and Minister of State for cooperation of Rwanda, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Eugène-Richard Gasana, on behalf of their Governments, signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Rwanda.

European Union pays an exceptional attention to its external relations with African countries, the establishment of diplomatic relations with one of these countries is therefore an important issue for Lithuania in its preparation, during the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2013, for the Africa-EU summit that will be held in the beginning of 2014. Lithuania is also interested in cooperation with Rwanda in frames of international organisations and its support while running for a position in the United Nations: it is particularly important to ensure bigger support to Lithuania as a candidate for a non-regular member position in the UN Security Council in 2014-2015.

Rwanda is the 165th country with which Lithuania established diplomatic relations.
