LITHUANIA ESTABLISHED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH LIBYA

On 11 June in New York Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador  Dalius Čekuolis and Permanent Representative to the United Nations of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Ambassador Giadalla A.Ettalhi signed on behalf of governments of both countries a Joint Communication establishing diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Libya.

Libya’s striving to regain the trust of international community was welcomed by all EU Member States. The EU constantly notes that it hopes to see Libya as a fully-fledged participant of the Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and the Barcelona Process.

Libya is an important economic partner of the southern EU Member States, big supplier of natural gas and oil in the world.

Although at the moment Lithuanian-Libyan economic cooperation is not very intensive the establishment of diplomatic relations should create more favourable conditions for implementation of not only political, but also economic Lithuania’s interests in this country rich in energy resources.
