LITHUANIA ENHANCES CIVILIAN ACTIVITIES IN AFGHANISTAN’S GHOR PROVINCE
On 8 September Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis appointed Ambassador Gintė Damušytė as coordinator of Lithuanian support and projects in Afghanistan.
The Ambassador will coordinate civilian activities of Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province and provide support for civilian, development and humanitarian projects. Particularly important part of Gintė Damušytė’s mission is encouragement of other state, international and nongovernmental organizations’ and agencies’ attention and activities in Ghor Province.
Lithuanian-led PRT in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province started operating in June. In July it was enforced by Special mission headed by Foreign Affairs Ministry diplomat Dainius Baublys. The main task of the mission is to maintain liaison with region’s political, military and religious leaders, encourage regional and central authorities’ cooperation, mediate between local leaders and communities.
Ambassador Damušytė will also contribute to enhancement of Lithuania’s role in developing Euro-Atlantic community’s cooperation with NATO’s eastern border neighbours.
