Lithuania elected Vice-Chair of UNESCO Executive Board
During the first session of UNESCO’s new Executive Board in Paris today, Lithuania was elected Vice-Chair of this governing body. Lithuania’s Ambassador to UNESCO Arūnas Gelūnas will represent Lithuania in the Executive Board.
Germany’s representative was elected Chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board. The Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Morocco, South Africa and Sweden were also elected Vice-Chairs.
The Executive Board is one of the main governing bodies of UNESCO. It is composed of representatives of 58 member states. The Executive Board ensures the overall management of UNESCO and sees that its decisions are properly carried out.
Lithuania, as a member of the Executive Council, will also take part in the activities of the Finance and Administrative Commission, the Programme and External Relations Commission, the Committee on Non-Governmental Partners, and the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, which considers all questions concerning the implementation of UNESCO’s standard-setting instruments, concerning recommendations to member states and international conventions. The Committee also examines communications relating to cases and questions concerning the exercise of human rights in UNESCO’s fields of competence.
On 11 November, a session of the General Conference of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) in Paris elected Lithuania (171 votes) as a member of the Executive Council for the period 2015–2019.
Lithuania was previously elected as a member of the Executive Board for the periods 1997–2001 and 2005–2009. Lithuania was elected Vice-Chair of the UNESCO Executive Board for the periods 1999–2001 and 2007–2009.
