Lithuania elected to the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation

On 1 June, during the 68th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Europe, which was held under the kind auspices of the Government of Bulgaria, in Sofia, Lithuania was elected to the Executive Council of the WTO for a period of 2023-2027. The meeting was attended by a delegation of Lithuanian diplomats and experts led by the Vice-Minister of Economy and Innovation of Lithuania Ieva Valeškaitė.

“As a member of the Executive Council, Lithuania will be able to contribute more actively to the development of a modern, peaceful and sustainable global tourism policy and to share Lithuania’s innovative experience in the field of tourism with the members of the WTO,” said Lithuania’s Ambassador Lyra Puišytė-Bostroem, who also attended the meeting.

The World Tourism Organisation is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for developing and promoting tourism at the world level. It brings together 160 countries. In 2022, WTO ousted Russia in response to its brutal military aggression against Ukraine. A governing board of WTO - the Executive Council - comprises 33 member states elected by regional commissions.

In autumn, Lithuania will begin its work on the Executive Council. This year marks 20 years of the country's WTO membership.
