LITHUANIA ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY
Lithuania has been elected a member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 2007-2009.
The membership was confirmed by the agreement of the United Nations Group of the States of Eastern and Central Europe, that was signed by Lithuanian Ambassador to the International organizations in Vienna Rytis Paulauskas on 7 July. Negotiations on of this group representation in the Board of Governors lasted for five years.
The Board of Governors is a 35-member policy-making body of the IAEA. During the last few years its agenda included the issues of international nuclear non-proliferation and verification, with special attention to nuclear programs of Iran and Southern Korea.
As a member of the Board of Governors Lithuania will consider the matters of regional cooperation on nuclear development, as well as address environmental problems of radioactive waste management, implement technical cooperation projects.
