Lithuania-Egypt political consultations focus on bilateral cooperation

During the Lithuania-Egypt political consultations in Cairo on 17 January, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Ihab Nasr discussed bilateral cooperation and key issues on the international agenda.

Germanas emphasized the need to promote a more active economic and cultural cooperation between the countries, and to make better use of bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

As regards security situations in the Middle East and North Africa region, Germanas said:

“Egypt plays an important role in combating terrorism, curbing illegal migration and addressing the Syrian refugee crisis.”

Nasr pointed out that, historically, the European Union member states and the EU itself were the most important partners of Egypt. According to him, it is necessary to jointly deal with the issues of terrorism, refugees, illegal migration and other problems arising from the precarious security and economic situation in the region. After having essentially agreed on priorities for the EU-Egypt partnership, the participants of the meeting also saw new opportunities for further development of bilateral relations.

Both sides agreed to continue holding regular bilateral consultations and to intensify their cooperation in various spheres, especially in the economic and cultural fields.
