Lithuania draws attention to threat of use of chemical weapons dumped at sea

The 20th session of the Conference of the States Parties of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) takes place in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 30 November - 4 December.

The event discusses the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, international cooperation in the peaceful uses of chemistry, issues related to ensuring the universality of the Convention, electing members of the Council, the OPCW Programme to Strengthen Cooperation with Africa on the Chemical Weapons Convention, the annual report of the Organisation and the OPCW budget.

The head of the Lithuanian delegation, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrius Krivas read the national report, which draws attention to potential risks of the use of chemical weapons dumped in the Baltic Sea after the Second World War for terrorist purposes.

Lithuania and The International Dialogues on Underwater Munitions (IDUM), a non-governmental organization, co-hosted an event in the margins of the conference. Krivas gave a speech at the event that focused on chemical weapon munitions dumped at sea.
