Lithuania continues to support Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Ukraine

On 23 May, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Laima Jurevičienė signed an agreement, which committed Lithuania to allocate EUR 20, 000 under the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania to implement the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Ukraine.

The Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017 is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and Ukrainian authorities, which renews the Council’s commitment to assist Ukraine in its necessary reform agenda in the areas of human rights, the rule of law and democracy. This Action Plan intends to support Ukraine in the following priority areas: constitutional reform and functioning of democratic institutions, reform of judiciary, democratic governance, decentralisation and local government reform, economic crime (fight against corruption and money laundering), and human rights protection. In 2014, Lithuania allocated EUR 10, 000 to implement this initiative.

Lithuania makes voluntary contributions to support international organisations, missions’ activities and to implement projects in Ukraine as well as sends experts who participate in various projects to share best practices under the auspices of Lithuania and the European Commission. In 2014-2016, the Government’s total support for Ukraine exceeds EUR 4.4 million, out of which Lithuania has granted more than EUR 1,17 million in humanitarian aid.
