Lithuania calls on the U.S. television broadcasters to avoid confusing viewers by indicating a false country of origin of Lithuanian basketball players
The Embassy of Lithuania to the United States of America and to the United Mexican States drew the attention of an American regional cable and satellite television network, and radio service (MSG), the Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and leaders of the Knicks, an American professional basketball team, to the broadcasting of misleading information about the country of origin of Lithuanian basketball players playing in the United States.
The Embassy stressed that the entire Lithuanian World Community had great concerns over the fact that Vilnius, the Soviet Union, had been falsely indicated as the place of birth of Mindaugas Kuzminskas, the player of the U.S. basketball team the Knicks, as the U.S.S.R. no longer exists. Lithuania fought for its freedom and restored its independence on 11 March 1990, twenty-six years ago. The Embassy’s letter also pointed out that the United States had never recognized Lithuania’s annexation and incorporation into the Soviet Union.
