Lithuania boosts economic and cultural ties with Uruguay
On 4 October, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas received the Ambassador of Uruguay Pablo Ernesto Scheiner Correa, who is accredited to Lithuania.
The Ambassador of Uruguay is visiting Lithuania within the framework of the Latin American cultural events. The events were organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania together with Latin American embassies accredited to Lithuania and honorary consuls of these countries. The meeting highlighted that the cultural events in Vilnius would help Lithuanians become more familiar with Latin America’s rich traditions and would raise awareness of cultural characteristics of this region.
“I am glad that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can contribute to a better mutual understanding,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister, who also welcomed the growing volume of trade between the two countries and called for finding new niches for economic cooperation.
About 2,000 people of Lithuanian descent live in Uruguay, which is home to the 3rd largest Lithuanian community in South America after Brazil and Argentina. The 21st South American Lithuanian Youth Congress will take place in Montevideo on 12-14 January 2018.
Lithuania and Uruguay established their diplomatic relations in 1931. Uruguay pursued the policy of non-recognition of Lithuania’s forceful incorporation into the Soviet Union. The two countries re-established their diplomatic relations on 8 March 1993.
