Lithuania assists Micronesia build cybersecurity capacity

On 30 September in Vilnius, the Head of the Directorate for Indo-Pacific, Ričardas Šlepavičius, met with a delegation from the Federated States of Micronesia led by Secretary of Justice Leonito Bacalando Jr. They discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Micronesia, development cooperation, cybersecurity, civil resilience, and other relevant issues concerning the Indo-Pacific region.

Participants of the meeting discussed the successful development cooperation project "Strengthening the Cyber Security Ecosystem in Micronesia" initiated by the Lithuanian Embassy in Japan and implemented by Lithuanian company NRD Cyber Security, which aims to help the country enhance its cyber security capabilities. The number of cyber-attacks has significantly increased, particularly since Micronesia severed diplomatic ties with Moscow in 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Micronesia is one of the few countries in the world and the only one in the region to have severed diplomatic ties with Russia. Šlepavičius thanked Micronesia for its principled stance on Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

"Lithuania is grateful to Micronesia for consistently showing its full support for Ukraine, including at the United Nations. We are part of a group of like-minded countries that are trying to end Russia's brutal war in Ukraine," Šlepavičius said.

The prospects of bilateral cooperation were also discussed, and areas were presented where Lithuania could implement development cooperation and other projects. Šlepavičius stressed that Lithuania was ready to share its best practices with Micronesia.

Lithuania established diplomatic relations with Micronesia in 2013. The first Ambassador to Micronesia, Aurelijus Zykas, who resides in Tokyo, was accredited in February 2025.
