Lithuania-Argentine political consultations take place in Vilnius

On 15 June, the second Lithuania-Argentine political consultations took place in Vilnius. The consultations focused on bilateral ties, the relationship between the European Union and Latin America, cooperation within international organisations, and regional issues.

The consultations were led by Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Neris Germanas and the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentine Gustavo Zlauvinen.

The diplomats of the two countries noted that there were many opportunities for a more active development of the bilateral relationship in the political, scientific fields and tourism. A special emphasis was laid on the benefits of academic and cultural exchanges.

Germanas said that representatives of the countries’ academic community and businessmen could jointly implement projects in the fields of information technology and life sciences, and engage as partners in the field of research and innovation. Argentina was invited to send representatives to take part in the Life Sciences Baltics 2016, which is the biggest international forum in the region for world-class biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical devices experts from all over the world.

The officials agreed to continue to work with an aim to conclude bilateral intergovernmental treaties on extradition of persons who have been sentenced to imprisonment, on economic cooperation and for the avoidance of double taxation.

The diplomats also remembered that this year marked the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Argentina.

Argentina is home to about 200,000 people with roots in Lithuania, who contribute to the advancement of bilateral cultural and economic relations, and seek to raise awareness about Lithuania in Argentina.

The Foreign Ministries of Lithuania and Argentine signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a mechanism for bilateral consultations in 2008. The first political consultations took place in Buenos Aires in 2011.

The countries re-established their diplomatic relations on 25 September 1991.
