LITHUANIA AND THE UNITED KINGDOM ORGANIZED A ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ON THE EUROPEAN UNION ENERGY ISSUES IN VILNIUS

On 9 May Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Embassy of the United Kingdom (the UK) organized a round table discussion on the European Union energy issues.

Representatives from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Departments of Trade and Industry, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the UK Embassy, also from the Government, the President’s Office, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy and Environment took part in the round table discussion.

Future activities were discussed regarding the implementation of the European Council’s (8-9 March 2007) decisions on energy security, further liberalization of the EU internal market and curbing climate change.

According to the EU Department Director of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Purlys, the meeting was a good opportunity for both sides to seek common ground, as well as to achieve better understanding of the two countries’ interests regarding important European energy policy issues, estimating correlation between energy security and nuclear energy, and climate change.
