LITHUANIA AND THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION DEVELOP COOPERATION

On 21 May in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius met with Hans-Petter Boe, who covers the issues of Nordic and Baltic countries at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The interlocutors discussed perspectives of bilateral and regional cooperation between Lithuania and the IOM in the areas of migration management and fight against trafficking in human beings.

Joint participation in the implementation of projects of the European Refugee Return Fund and the European External Border Fund was also discussed during the meeting.

The Vice-Minister highlighted excellent relations between Lithuania and the IOM, and fruitful cooperation of Lithuanian institutions with the IOM Vilnius Office.

The IOM was established in 1951, it is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration. It works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM has 127 member states, a further 17 states hold observer status. The IOM has established offices in over 100 countries. Lithuania became IOM member state in November 1998. The IOM Vilnius Office, headed by Audra Sipavičienė, opened in May 1998.
