Lithuania and Thailand hold political consultations in Vilnius
On 6 February, the second political consultation between Lithuania and Thailand was held in Vilnius to discuss bilateral relations, the ties between the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), cooperation in international organizations, and regional issues.
The Foreign Ministry’s Director of the Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department Eduardas Borisovas led the Lithuanian delegation, and the Thai delegation was headed by Songphol Sukchan, Director-General of Department of the European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
Borisov reminded the delegation of Thailand about Lithuania’s aim of having a permanent visa free travel granted for Lithuanian citizens. Lithuania is currently one of the three Schengen countries, whose citizens are not granted visa-free travel to Thailand for a period of up to 30 days. The parties agreed to continue their efforts to conclude an agreement on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic or service passports.
The participants agreed to deepen cooperation in the fields of science, innovation and technology, and to promote ties between universities. Lithuania’s achievements in the fields of life sciences, renewable energy and laser manufacturing were also presented.
The participants discussed economic cooperation, the promotion of foreign direct investment and presented the potential of Lithuania’s transport infrastructure, as well as that of the Port of Klaipėda. Moreover, the possibility to exchange business delegations was assessed.
Borisov presented the potential of tourism sector in the country and called on the people of Thailand to come to Lithuania more often.
The first political consultation between Lithuania and Thailand was organised in Bangkok in 2012.
Until 28 February 2017, the fee for tourist visas has been waived for the citizens of Lithuania for a period of up to 60 days.
