LITHUANIA AND SLOVAKIA STRENGTHEN BILATERAL COOPERATION

On 4 June in Bratislava Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas discussed with Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Kubiš the bilateral relations and preparations for official visit of Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus to Slovakia in 2008.

The foreign ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation in the European Union, look for points of contact and take joint initiatives, also involving other EU members. One of examples of such cooperation is common policy on the U.S. visa issue.

“Only by taking a common position we can reach the goals we strive for,” Minister P.Vaitiekūnas said.

Lithuanian and Slovak Ministers agreed to organize bilateral political consultations of Foreign Ministries officials in autumn 2007.

At the meeting Lithuanian Foreign Minister also underlined the importance of cooperation between the Visegrad Four and the Baltic States on significant issues of European neighbourhood policy, energy security, infrastructure development and other.

On 5 June Minister P.Vaitiekūnas met with Lithuanian businessmen and representatives of Lithuanian community in Slovakia and discussed the matters of concern to them.

On 5 June Lithuanian Foreign Minister discussed with Speaker of Slovak National Council (Parliament) Pavol Paška the perspectives of intensifying Lithuanian-Slovak bilateral cooperation, energy issues, situation in the Western Balkans and in Kosovo.

Today Lithuanian Foreign Minister P.Vaitiekūnas goes on a three-day official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
