LITHUANIA AND RUSSIA AGREED TO COOPERATE IN RESCUE OPERATIONS IN THE BALTIC SEA

On 14 November the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Petras Vaitiekūnas paid a working visit to Moscow. At the meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, Co-chairman of Intergovernmental Commission Minister of Transport Igor Levitin and Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Sergey Yastrzhembsky bilateral Lithuanian-Russian relations, forthcoming EU-Russia Summit, NATO-Russia relations and other topical issues of international relations were discussed.

Chairmen of Lithuanian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission Mr Vaitiekūnas and  Mr Levitin signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in maritime and aeronautical search and rescue operations in the Baltic Sea.

Minister Vaitiekūnas with Russia’s officials also addressed the issues of development of the Kaliningrad region, improvement of border infrastructure, cooperation in transport, trade, energy, environment protection, culture, education and science spheres.

Bilateral agreements that are to be signed at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission in the first half of 2007 were also considered.
