LITHUANIA AND ROMANIA WILL COOPERATE IN THE SPHERE OF THE EU EASTERN PARTNERSHIP
On March 31 in Vilnius, Lithuanian and Romanian foreign ministries held bilateral consultations, during which officials agreed to consult and coordinate on the positions of both countries regarding the issues of the European Union’s Eastern Neighbourhood policy.
The consultations were led by State Secretary for European Affairs of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu and Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister Egidijus Meilūnas.During the consultations, the officials agreed to maintain one position on the evaluation of crimes committed by totalitarian regimes at the EU level and to raise nuclear safety and environmental issues at the EU level.
B.Aurescu also met with Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis, who acquainted Romania’s representative with the relevant issues of Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), voiced Lithuania’s support for Romania’s accession process to the Schengen area. During the conversation, the interlocutors exchanged opinions on the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood policy issues.
According to B.Aurescu, recently bilateral relations between Lithuania and Romania and joint initiatives, such as the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood, the new Group of Friends of Georgia, nuclear safety and other international policy initiatives, have intensified significantly.
During the visit of the State Secretary of the Romanian MFA B.Aurescu, details of the forthcoming official visit of the Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi to Lithuania on 3-4 May were also discussed.
