Lithuania and Romania celebrate a centenary of their diplomatic relations
As Lithuania and Romania celebrate a special anniversary today, one hundred years of diplomatic relations, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, had a telephone conversation with the Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița-Teodora Odobescu.
"When commemorating a centenary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations, we can be happy that our countries are close allies, working hand in hand to address many important issues, including regional and international security, support for Ukraine, the enlargement of the European Union and sanctions policy," said Landsbergis.
Lithuania and Romania work together to defend the shared values of democracy, the rule of law and human rights and cooperate closely within the European Union and NATO. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania thanked Romania for its participation in NATO's Air Policing missions, through which the country contributed to ensuring the security of Lithuania and the entire Baltic region, and expressed gratitude for Romania's significant support to Ukraine, which brings it closer to achieving the common goal - Ukraine's victory over the aggressor Russia.
During the conversation, prospects for strengthening bilateral relations, support for Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the enlargement of the European Union were also discussed, noting that Lithuania and Romania consistently supported Ukraine, Moldova and other countries that had chosen the path of European integration.
"Russia's aggression against the free state of Ukraine, which shocked the world, has once again shown that the European Union membership is the best investment in peace, stability and ensuring democratic values," emphasized the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
Both Foreign Ministers confirmed their determination to strengthen further political, economic, and cultural ties between the countries, deepening the century-long close and friendly cooperation.
Lithuania and Romania established diplomatic relations on August 21, 1924, after the appointment of the envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary Dovas Zaunius, who resided in Prague, as the first Lithuanian envoy in Bucharest.
