LITHUANIA AND POLAND STRENGTHEN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
On 30 January Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Anna Fotyga who came on her first official visit to Lithuania and discussed Lithuanian-Polish cooperation projects of major importance. In discussion about energy cooperation and building of the new nuclear power plant, Minister Vaitiekūnas pointed up the importance of Poland’s participation in this project. According to the Minister, this four-party energy project is significant no only in terms of commerce, but first of all in terms of geopolitics and national security.
Lithuanian and Polish Foreign Ministers agreed that four countries participating in the project should take the final political decision at the governmental level and oblige energy companies to start implementation of the project as soon as possible.
The issues of realization of Lithuanian-Polish energy bridge and the Rail Baltica project, diversification of the energy resources and the strategic energy policy framework proposed by the European Commission were discussed at the meeting.
“Creation of the common energy market is a key condition for effective European Union’s energy policy. We should create effective solidarity instruments for joint EU action in case of interruption of energy supply,” Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas said.
Lithuanian and Polish Ministers also touched upon topical issued of international policy, relations with the neighbour states and underlined the importance of strengthening the EU’s Eastern neighbourhood policy.
Mrs Fotyga and Mr Vaitiekūnas welcomed strategic Lithuanian-Polish partnership and cordial bilateral relations, that had intensified greatly on 15th anniversary of restoration of Lithuanian-Polish diplomatic relations.
“Cooperation between Lithuania and Poland could be an example of good neighbour relations to other states,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy marked.
At the meeting it was emphasised that it is necessary to develop not only economic, political and cultural exchange, but also promote initiatives that bring together friendly neighbour nations, particularly the youth. The Ministers also discussed the matters of importance to Poles living Lithuania and Lithuanians living in Poland. These and other issues are planned to be constructively discussed at the renewed Council for Lithuanian-Polish intergovernmental cooperation.
In Lithuania Polish Foreign Minister also met with the Speaker of Lithuanian Seimas Viktoras Muntianas and Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.
