Lithuania and Poland are destined to be together, says Lithuania’s Foreign Minister

Lithuania and Poland must build a positive agenda and solve all problems in a spirit of mutual trust and cooperation, because this corresponds with their citizens’ interests, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius in a meeting with members of the Polish Discussion Club on 24 February.

The head of the Lithuanian diplomacy stressed that Lithuania’s interests in the field of security and defence were closely linked, thus security cooperation with Poland played an important role in the strengthening of security in the country and the whole region. It is necessary to further intensify security cooperation in the run-up to the next NATO Summit in Warsaw.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister said that the cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in the fields of energy and transport was important for energy security in the whole region. Lithuania cooperates with Poland, continuing to implement the synchronization of the Baltic States’ power systems with the Continental European network. “It is important to implement the 2015 agreement on the Gas Interconnector Poland-Lithuania (GIPL) by the end of 2019,” said Linkevičius.

According to the Minister, Poland and Lithuania continue to actively support the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative. Linkevičius noted that in order to improve coordination of positions, it was important to make better use of various regional forums as a cooperation platform.

“It is important to initiate joint assistance projects in Ukraine, also to support the European perspective for Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova as well as to aim to have the Minsk accords fully implemented by Russia. In a dialogue with Belarus, it is important to maintain focus on human rights, environment, nuclear safety, economy and other issues,” the Minister noted.
