LITHUANIA AND OTHER EU COUNTRIES APPEAL FOR A CEASEFIRE IN THE GAZA STRIP

On 30 December in Paris, during an informal emergency EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas and heads of the EU countries’ diplomacy discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip.

French EU Presidency and other EU member states voice great concern regarding the violence and a large number of victims in the Gaza Strip. The EU also appeals for an immediate ceasefire and a return to truce. During the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, it is emphasised once again that the Gaza conflict could not be solved by military actions.

“In solidarity with other EU countries, Lithuania expresses big concern regarding provocations, violence and victims in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, calls for an immediate ceasefire and urges the sides in conflict to return to truce. We also urge to guarantee the possibility of urgent humanitarian aid provision to the victims,” said Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Ušackas.

Head of Lithuanian diplomacy says that he is aware of Israel’s right to defend its citizens from the terrorist attacks of Hamas. However, herewith Foreign Minister indicates that while defending from terrorist attacks, innocent civilians should not be hurt in Gaza. And in the current situation, it is necessary to immediately join efforts of the international community in order to ensure that Israel and Hamas return to truce and to guarantee humanitarian aid provision to innocent civilians.
