LITHUANIA AND KALININGRAD REGION EXPLORE NEW AREAS OF COOPERATION
On 28 February Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and Georgij Boos, Kaliningrad Region Governor visiting Lithuania discussed Lithuania-Kaliningrad Region cooperation in the areas of economy and tourism, border demarcation, border infrastructure and visa issues. In the meeting the issues concerning the enactment of visa facilitation agreement between the EU and the Russian Federation were discussed.
“We shared the view that the residents of the Kaliningrad Region and Lithuanian citizens are to be spared from the bureaucratic hurdles at the border to improve human communication”, said Minister P.Vaitiekūnas.
The Kaliningrad Region Governor G.Boos thanked Lithuanian diplomats for their efforts to facilitate visa regime for Kaliningrad Region residents.
The Kaliningrad Region Governor welcomed Minister P.Vaitiekūnas‘s suggestion to develop water tourism activities in the Curonian Spit and Vištytis lake.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas and the Kaliningrad Region Governor G.Boos also shared opinions on the Lithuania-Russia border demarcation activities and possibilities to hasten the process, as well as the border control posts infrastructure improvement.
The participants of the meeting also explored possibilities for increasing Russian cargo volume to Klaipėda and Kaliningrad sea ports and equalize railway tariffs.
These and other issues of Lithuania-Kaliningrad Region cooperation are to be discussed also in the forthcoming meeting of Lithuania-Russia Intergovernmental Commission this summer.
