LITHUANIA AND JAPAN SHARE COMMON ATTITUDES AND ENJOY INTENSIVE COOPERATION, SAYS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER

On 20 June in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with Japan’s Ambassador Kazuko Shiraishi and stressed that Lithuania and Japan shared common attitudes, enjoyed intensive cooperation in many areas, and would further strengthen bilateral relations.

The Foreign Minister conveyed his gratitude to the Japanese Government for successful cooperation in Afghanistan’s reconstruction process and in joint projects.

Linkevičius also drew attention to the growing economic cooperation and underlined that, in this regard, the mission of Keidanren, the Japanese Business Federation, on 16-18 July in Lithuania was important.

The meeting focused on the intense cooperation between Lithuania and Japan in the field of nuclear safety and security – the Seminar on Meeting Challenges of Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation took place in Vilnius on 18 June. A workshop was organised on radiation control near the Lithuanian state border on 20 June in Medininkai. On 23-26 June, the head of the International Nuclear Research Cooperation Center at Tokyo Institute of Technology is to pay a visit to Lithuania. He will present proposals to Kaunas University of Technology concerning the training of nuclear experts.

At the meeting, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister thanked Japan for strong support to Lithuania’s strategic goals and engagement in the new regional nuclear power plant project in Lithuania. Linkevičius expressed hope that the constructive cooperation among all regional partners would allow us to enhance this project.
