LITHUANIA AND ITALY ARE SEARCHING FOR A MUTUALLY ACCEPTABLE SOLUTION REGARDING THE ISSUE OF THE PRE-WAR LITHUANIAN EMBASSY BUILDING

On 22 November, State Secretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deividas Matulionis, on his working visit to Italy, and Italian Secretary-General of the Italian Foreign Ministry Giampiero Massolo discussed bilateral Lithuanian-Italian relations and the issue of the pre-war Lithuanian Embassy building.

The State Secretary indicated that Lithuania appreciated Italy’s offer to rent Cassali Stozzi building for a symbolical pay as compensation to Lithuania, assessing is as a wish of Italy to tackle the issue positively. However, this offer is not acceptable to Lithuania.

D.Matulionis offered to consider a possibility of a financial compensation or other possible solutions of this issue. During the meeting, they agreed to continue searching for a mutually acceptable solution.

On 23-24 November, State Secretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs D.Matulionis is taking part in the meeting of State Secretaries of the EU Foreign Ministries that is organized by Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome.

During the meeting the State Secretaries are discussing the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, priorities of the approaching Slovenia’s EU presidency, the development of the economic and cultural diplomacy and their influence on diplomatic and consular representations. Besides, perspectives of the establishment of the European External Affairs office, the management of the EU Foreign Ministries and effective utilization of financial resources, as well as other issues are also being discussed.
