LITHUANIA AND IRELAND – FOR CLOSER BILATERAL CONTACTS
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis and the Chairman of the Parliament of Ireland Rory O’Hanlon who pays a visit to Vilnius discussed topical issues of bilateral and multilateral relations as well as the European Union issues.
A. Valionis welcomed Ireland’s decision to open an embassy in Vilnius in the nearest future. Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the Head of Irish Parliament agreed that successful Lithuanian-Irish cooperation would increase in the years to come with the approach of joint Irish, Lithuanian and Greek presidency of the European Union in 2013.
It is planned that after new EU presidency system takes effect, Lithuania would share the European Union’s presidency with Ireland and Greece in 2013-2014.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the Chairman of Irish Parliament also discussed the ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe and negotiations on the new Financial Perspective for the EU. A. Valionis and Rory O’Hanlon stand for the agreement on the European Union’s Financial Perspective for 2007-2013 to be reached as quickly as possible.
