On 22 February in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and Ireland’s Foreign Minister Micheál Martin discussed possibilities for closer cooperation when preparing to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and discussed important issues of bilateral relations.
The Ministers agreed to hold regular consultations between the Chairmanship teams of the two countries, as well as joint trainings of the Irish and Lithuanian diplomats at the OSCE Secretariat in Vienna. It was also agreed to cooperate during the Chairmanship on the issues of conflict resolution and human rights.
During the conversation, the foreign ministers also assessed the prospects of a more active bilateral cooperation and the integration of the Lithuanian community in Ireland.
In 2011, Lithuania will chair the OSCE. At the OSCE Ministerial Council in Athens on 1-2 December 2009, foreign ministers approved of Ireland’s Chairmanship in 2012.
