At the event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and India on 14 June, Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgiryte Liauskiene emphasized active cultural cooperation and academic ties of the countries, the Lithuania Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

A presentation of the book "All Of My Indias" by Diana Mickeviciene and the exhibition of photographs by Linas Mickevicius entitled "India. Many Colourful Lives" took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the event, Skaisgiryte Liauskiene stressed that India was Lithuania's strategic partner in Asia. According to the deputy minister, more opportunities for political, economic, scientific and cultural cooperation opened up when Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004.

The EU-India relationship was established already in the fifties last century. The EU and India became strategic partners in 2004.

The deputy minister noted that Indology was successfully developing in Lithuania. Sanskrit has been taught in Vilnius University for decades 1995. Hindi is also taught at the Centre of Oriental Studies. Lithuanian students and scholars travel to India to study and for internship; students from India also demonstrate increasing interest in Lithuanian research institutions. The India Studies Centre was established at Mykolas Romeris University in 2011.

Lithuania and India established diplomatic relations on 27 April 1992.
