LITHUANIA AND ICELAND WILL FURTHER STRENGTHEN THEIR RELATIONS, SAYS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER

On 13 June in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and vowed to further strengthen the successful bilateral relations after the decision of the Government of Iceland to temporarily stop the EU membership negotiations, and to organize a referendum.

“We will honour whatever the people of Iceland decide. We also believe that the experience of Iceland, gained during the membership negotiations, will be used in other areas of cooperation between the EU and Iceland. In fact, we have learnt more about each other during the negotiations,” said Linkevičius.

During the first meeting with the new Icelandic Minister, Linkevičius hailed the excellent bilateral relations, an effective cooperation within the United Nations, NATO and other international organizations, and discussed the Nordic-Baltic cooperation, as well as prospects and important international policy issues.

Linkevičius invited the Foreign Minister of Iceland to pay a visit to Lithuania.

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also congratulated his counterpart on the approaching Icelandic National Day.

Iceland was the first foreign county to recognize officially the independence of Lithuania on 11 February 1991. Lithuania and Iceland re-established their diplomatic relations on 26 August 1991.
