LITHUANIA AND FRANCE ARE STRENGTHENING BILATERAL COOPERATION
On 12-13 February, Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Žygimantas Pavilionis took part in the political consultations in France. During the meetings with advisers to the President of France on the European issues Fabien Raynaud and energy issues Matthieu Louvot, EU adviser to the Prime Minister Gilles Briatta, the Director for Strategic Affairs, Security, and Disarmament of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Gerard Araud and Director of European Cooperation of France Pierre Menat, bilateral Lithuanian-French political, economic relations and important issues of the European Union were discussed.
A special attention was devoted to the discussion of the priorities of the upcoming French European Union presidency and energy challenges, which the Baltic States will face after the closing of the Ignalina nuclear power plant. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ž.Pavilionis also presented Lithuania’s proposals regarding the conclusions of the upcoming Spring European Council on the external energy policy and internal market.
During the high-level consultations, the possibilities of implementation of the initiatives, presented during the visit of Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas to France on 15 November in 2007 were discussed. The initiatives include the possibilities to organize a follow-up of the Vilnius Energy Summit in Paris and the seminar on the revision of the European security strategy in Vilnius.
