On 25 September, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The ministers signed an agreement between Lithuania and Brazil on cooperation in the fields of education and science, and discussed the development of bilateral relations, opportunities for economic cooperation, support for Ukraine, and cooperation within international organisations.

Budrys welcomed the signing of the agreement and highlighted its importance in strengthening academic and scientific ties between the two countries.

“This agreement opens up new opportunities for Lithuanian and Brazilian students, researchers and academic institutions. We seek to expand student and researcher exchanges, implement joint research projects, and build long-term partnerships between the scientific and research centres of our two countries,” said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

The minister Budrys noted that Lithuania is particularly interested in strengthening cooperation in the physical sciences and technology fields, as well as developing joint projects in the areas of the bioeconomy, agriculture, natural resources and environmental protection.

During the meeting, Budrys provided an update on the establishment of Lithuania’s Embassy in Brazil. The embassy is expected to become fully operational in the near future. The minister also encouraged Brazil to open an embassy in Vilnius in the near term.

“Brazil is one of Lithuania’s most important partners in Latin America and a promising market for Lithuanian businesses. Permanent diplomatic representation in both capitals would strengthen political, economic and people-to-people ties,” said Budrys.

The ministers also discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the responsibility of the international community to continue supporting Ukraine.

“We cannot allow aggression to become the new norm in international relations. Russia has shown no genuine intention to end the war or pursue peace, which is why it is essential to continue supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on the aggressor,”  Budrys stressed.
