Lithuania allocates humanitarian assistance to help victims of extreme weather events in Malawi and Sri Lanka
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania allocated EUR 10,000 in humanitarian aid to help El Niño victims in Malawi and people affected by a tropical cyclone in Sri Lanka. The funds will be channelled through the United Nations World Food Programme.
Thus Lithuania contributes to the international effort to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to victims of natural disasters. A strong El Niño and abnormal rainfall patterns during 2014-2015 have contributed to a spike in food insecurity. There is a real threat of a famine in Malawi, where 2.9 m people are food insecure. On 15 May 2016 Sri Lanka was hit by the severe tropical storm that caused widespread landslides and the worst flooding in 25 years. More than 300,000 people have been affected by this disaster, many remain displaced from their homes.
In 2016, Lithuania already allocated EUR 711, 4 thousand in humanitarian aid.
