Lithuania allocates funds for humanitarian aid to Sierra Leone

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated EUR 10,000 in humanitarian aid to the International Committee of the Red Cross for Sierra Leone. In 2017, Lithuania allocated EUR 220,000 in humanitarian aid for persons affected by conflicts and natural disasters in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali and Sri Lanka.

On 14 August 2017, Sierra Leone suffered a natural disaster. Mudslides and flooding occurred due to heavy rainfall.  The United Nations reported that 500 people were dead and 600 were missing near Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown. 1,600 families were  affected by this disaster. The country declared a ‘state of emergency’ and the Sierra Leone’s Government has called for the evacuation of about 10,000 people due to the threat of additional landslides.
