LITHUANIA AIMS TO INTENSIFY BUSINESS AND ACADEMIC RELATIONS WITH SYRIA

On 26 April, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius participated in the consultations of the Lithuanian and Syrian Foreign Ministries in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Bilateral relations were discussed during the meeting with Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abd Al-Fattah Ammora. The officials agreed to further develop a bilateral cooperation agenda, to intensify economic relations, to strengthen the legal framework for bilateral relations, to widen the scope of cooperation in the areas of culture, education and science.

Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius emphasized that Lithuania and Syria had to develop business relations more intensively. He expressed satisfaction that a business delegation led by Lithuania’s Honorary Consul General in Syrian Arab Republic Nawar Sukkar was coming to take part in the International Trade Fair for Agriculture, Food Stuff and Packaging Industries AgroBalt 2010 in Vilnius this year.

During the conversation, the interlocutors dedicated a lot of attention to the situation in the Middle East, Iraq and Iran. Syria’s role in the Middle East Peace Process and relations between the European Union and Syria were also discussed.

Possibilities to promote the cooperation between the Lithuanian and Syrian universities were discussed during the meeting with Prof. Dr. Wael Mualla, the President of Damascus University, which is the largest and oldest in Syria.

W.Mualla suggested signing a cooperation agreement with a respective Lithuanian university and organizing the Lithuanian Days at Damascus University.

On 25 April, Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius met with members of the Lithuanian and Syrian Chambers of Commerce, had a working dinner with Director General of Europe Department at the Syrian Foreign Ministry Radwan Lufti and EU ambassadors to Syria.

Syria recognized Lithuania’s Independence on 9 September 1991. Lithuania established diplomatic relations with this country on 25 May 1993.

On 27-28 April, Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius is paying a working visit to Jordan.
