LITHUANIA AIMS AT MORE INTENSIVE RELATIONS WITH AZERBAIJAN ON TRADE AND ENERGY ISSUES

On 8 April, during his official visit to Azerbaijan, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Industry and Energy Natik Aliyev.

The Ministers discussed possibilities of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, also the joint development of international energy and transport projects.

Minister V.Ušackas indicated that Lithuania would like to attract more investments of Azerbaijan to Lithuania, to continue active cooperation in the creation of the international transport corridor Traceca and highlighted the importance of the cargo train Viking. According to head of the Lithuanian diplomacy, even though in 2008 Azerbaijan became the biggest Lithuania’s trade partner in the region, the potential of relations in this field still remains not exhausted.

The regional business organisation Caspian Integration Business Club (CIBC), which unites the largest enterprises in the region, awarded Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Ušackas with a certificate of honour and conferred on him the status of a corresponding member for the input of the Lithuanian diplomacy into the shaping of the EU’s single energy policy and support to  Azerbaijan’s Euro-integrational goals.

V.Ušackas also visited the Foundation of former Azerbaijan’s President Heydar Aliyev, where he discussed the issues of cultural cooperation between the two countries with the First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva. Chairperson of the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation “Support to Lithuanian Children” Rasa Kubilienė took part in the meeting.

After the meeting, the Minister will take part in the opening of an exhibition of photographer Tomas Kauneckas and will attend the musical concert of talented young Lithuanians that are supported by the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation. The concert will take place at Baku Philharmonic.

On 9 April, Minister of Foreign Affairs is returning to Vilnius.
