LITHUANIA AIMS AT CLOSER COOPERATION WITH MALTA
On 23 June in Vilnius, Lithuania‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Tonio Borg who was on a visit to Lithuania. The Ministers discussed issues related to bilateral relations, security policy, science and technologies, tackling of illegal migration, European Union‘s institutional reform and other important matters on the EU‘s agenda.
Minister V.Ušackas highlighted Lithuania‘s objective to develop relations with Malta as a partner in the EU, to promote more active economic and cultural relations as well as cooperation in the tourism field.
During the meeting, the heads of diplomacy exchanged views on the expansion of the EU’s Neighbourhood Policy eastwards and southwards. The Ministers agreed that there was a need for more openness in the attitude towards the closest neighbours and that some efforts were needed to facilitate the existing visa regimes.
Minister V.Ušackas invited Maltese representatives to attend the first ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Transport Ministers‘ Meeting and Asia-Europe Transport Development Forum on 19-20 October in Vilnius.
