LITHUANIA ACTIVELY SUPPORTS ENTRY INTO FORCE OF THE COMPREHENSIVE TEST BAN TREATY
On 24 September, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas took part in the fourth meeting of foreign ministers of the states that are parties to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The ministers endorsed the joint declaration of the meeting. With the help of this declaration, the foreign ministers who gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York are seeking to accelerate the Treaty’s entry into force.
The CTBT bans nuclear weapon test explosions in all environments. In conformity with this Treaty, the States Parties undertake not to carry out any nuclear weapon testing or any other nuclear explosion, and to prohibit and prevent any such nuclear explosion at any place under its jurisdiction or control.
Lithuania is an active supporter of the entry into force of the Treaty.
The Treaty will enter into force after its ratification by the nine remaining out of the 44 States that are listed in the Treaty and develop nuclear power today.
Lithuania signed the Treaty on 7 October 1996 and has become its full-fledged member since 7 February 2000.
