On 17 June in Lisbon, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Dalius Čekuolis met with the Portuguese Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Foreign Policy Rui Macieira and presented priorities for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in November in Vilnius.
Čekuolis thanked Portugal for the support to Lithuania’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and its aspirations of joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The directors agreed to organise Foreign Ministry consultations to share the Portuguese experience in working with the United Nations Security Council.
The diplomats also discussed important issues related to the EU’s relations with Russia and the Eastern Partnership, exchanged views on the situation in Syria and the Middle East region, and examined the EU’s relations with Latin American countries. Macieira presented activities of Lusofonia - an organization of Portuguese-speaking countries.
