LINKEVIČIUS TO ATTEND FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND GENERAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL MEETINGS IN LUXEMBOURG
On 24 June in Luxembourg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius will attend the Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The Council will discuss the Eastern Partnership in the run-up to the 3rd Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius.
Over the working dinner with Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Ministers will discuss NATO’s role in Afghanistan after 2014.
The EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard will also attend the Foreign Affairs Council meeting to discuss the issue of climate change. The Foreign Affairs Council’s discussion on Europe’s Southern Neighbourhood will focus on Syria. The Ministers will also discuss the Middle East peace process and the situation in the Western Balkans.
On 25 June in Luxembourg, Linkevičius will participate in the General Affairs Council meeting. The Council will traditionally prepare the European Council meeting on 27-28 June with emphasis on initiatives to enhance youth employment. The June European Council will address the following issues: conclusion of this year’s European Semester, including the endorsement of country specific recommendations; Compact for Growth and Jobs; Economic and Monetary Union; enlargement.
In view of the political agreement reached on June 19-20 in negotiations with the European Parliament on the multiannual financial framework 2014-2020, the Ministers will discuss the legislative acts covered by the MFF package and the current situation with regard to the European Union’s membership talks withthe Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, as well as the opening of negotiations on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the European Union and Kosovo.
As incoming Chair of the General Affairs Council in the second-half of 2013, Linkevičius will present priorities for the General Affairs Council under the Lithuanian chairmanship.
