Linkevičius meets with Georgia’s Defence Minister, stresses importance of continuity of reforms
On 14 September in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Minister of Defence of Georgia Tinatin Khidasheli. The Ministers discussed Georgia’s further European and Euro-Atlantic integration, security in the region.
“Currently, it is particularly important for Georgia to continue to push through the necessary reforms and to maintain pace as their implementation picks up. This will help Georgia to become a strong and democratic country, as well as a full-fledged member of the EU and NATO in due time,” said Linkevičius.
The Foreign Minister assured the Defence Minister of Lithuania’s strong support for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Khidasheli thanked him for Lithuania’s continued support. The Ministers discussed Georgia’s goal of receiving a visa-free regime with the EU and the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.
When speaking about Georgia’s integration into NATO, Linkevičius underlined that Lithuania supported Georgian aspirations and called for the use of all available means to deepen cooperation between Georgia and NATO. The NATO-Georgia Joint Training and Evaluation Centre, which was opened in August, sets an excellent example of such cooperation. One Lithuanian expert also works in this centre.
During the meeting, Linkevičius reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
