Linkevičius expresses condolences over the death of former President of Finland
On 17 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius expressed his condolences on the passing of the former President of Finland Mauno Koivisto. In this moment of loss, Linkevičius wished his family, relatives and the people of Finland immense strength.
Linkevičius signed the book of condolences at the Embassy of Finland in Vilnius. According to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, the President Koivisto will be remembered by people as a famous Finnish politician and head of state, an adamant promoter of European values and principles, who led the country towards European integration.
Linkevičius stressed that the President Koivisto was one of the first Western heads of state, who had paid a visit to Lithuania after the restoration of the country’s independence and helped strengthen the re-established bilateral diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Finland.
Koivisto served as the ninth President of Finland from 1982 to 1994. He passed away at the age of 93 years on 12 May.
