Linkevičius congratulated Turkey on its National Holiday
Linas Linkevičius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, congratulated Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, on the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey and expressed his solidarity with the Turkish people, who on the 15th of July fought for the values of the Republic and for the democratically elected national institutions, and wished them prosperity.
The Minister’s letter welcomed the constructive cooperation of the Turkish government with the Council of Europe on the recently particularly crucial issues of the rule of law and human rights. The Minister also emphasised the importance of the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Turkey and partnership with NATO for tackling international security issues.
“Our partnership with NATO is particularly important, because current security challenges can be successfully dealt with only by joint efforts. Seeking to ensure safety and stability in the region, Turkey can count on support of Lithuania – its reliable partner,” Mr. Linkevičius emphasised in his letter.
The letter also highlighted the important role of Turkey in solving the refugee crisis and battling terrorism together with the European Union, expressed expectations regarding Turkey's negotiations on the EU membership and consolidation of continued cooperation between the EU and Turkey upon renewal of the EU-Turkey Customs Union.
On 29 October 1923, the Parliament of Turkey adopted the declaration of proclamation of the Republic of Turkey. On that same day, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected the first President of Turkey.
