Linkevičius attends a meeting of representatives of Middle East Quartet in New York
On 30 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended a meeting of the representatives of Middle East Quartet, which was held in New York on the margins of the General Assembly’s session.
In the meeting, which was chaired by the UN Secretary-General, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister underscored the importance of the international community’s more active role in achieving a just, comprehensive settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“The current status quo is not an option, there is no alternative for a negotiated two-State solution, which is based on a vision of two states living side by side. Thus, the international community has to help the conflicting parties to restore confidence. We call for renewing meaningful negotiations as soon as possible,” said Linkevičius.
In February, heads of the Middle East Quartet took a decision to seek to regularly collaborate with the Arab countries. Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Arab League Secretary-General, as well as Foreign Ministers of the EU member states were invited to participate in the meeting.
